The first attendant this year: Sovejanca

One morning at the end of April, a little bear popped up in the backyard of a family who lives at the periphery of Soveja village (Vrancea county). According to some forest workers, it showed up several times in the neighbourhood too, but everybody thought that the mother was somewhere around. Finally the villagers realized that it was an orphan cub – a little female. The reason why she got lost from the mother is unknown, but her physical development and the late spring period makes us believe that was not the case of a den disturbance. Often the bear family is attacked by dogs (most likely shepherd dogs) and the cubs instinctually run on the trees. Some of them are shyer than others, descending later than their brothers. In such cases the mother has a difficult choice to make: either run away with the cubs that came off the trees first, or wait until the last one is on ground, jeopardizing thus the whole family. We don’t know whether this was the case with Sovejanca, but bear cubs remain orphaned usually due to some kind of disturbance.
