Analizing the avoidance of human crated artificial surfaces
Release method: ”soft release”. Collar type: ATS, GPS Iridium. The collar stayed on the bear until end of Januarry, when dissapeared due to malfunction.
Short analyze of the animal’s habitat use and movement dinamics during the 9 months period:
Image 1: Overview of the fixes sent by the collar

Image 2: Zone 1. The collar was tested several days for calibration in Gabriel’s apartment in Balan. Fixes with several meters error during calibration.

Image 3: Zone 2 and 3 The final rehabilitation enclosure, where the bear was equipped with the collar (small circle marked with 2), and the exploration area around the rehab facilities (bigger circle marked with 3).

Image 4: Zone 4 zoommed in: The bear leaves the natal home range (in our case the rehab center) in early fall and starts the so called juvenile dispersal. She approaches the main road that connects Lacu Rosu and Bicaz settlements (all three fixes during night time), but facing a clear barrier there (the road and the villages) turns to right towards East.

Image 5: zone 5. The road line that connects Damuc and Huisurez villages seems to be also a serious obstacle even if this is a road with light traffic. The bear turns to South utilizing the mountain block between Huisurez and Trei Fantani area. Field trips there showed that this is a mixed beach and spruce forest (beach fructificated abundantly in that year in the area).

Image 6: Zone 6. Explorative movements during late fall towards SE. The bear clearly avoids any human created artificial surfaces.

The bear hibernated in the cluster between zone 5 and 6. The last transmission of the collar was on 28th July. According to the manufacturer’s analyze the collar stopped to work due to unknown reasons.
